Greed for money was quite strange to my character. I sought and

sought for means to get much money in the abortest possible time.

At last I found. It was the worst thing in the world. I

thought it was the best. I had made the acquaintance of Hindce re-

volutionists and anachists in Geneva, where many of them were living

shortly before the war broke out. They were botheads, most of

then sparely educated, unscientifically formed, with all sort of

confounded ideas. I had hoped to learn something from then.

could not and had left them to their own circle, going my own ways.

Then, in one of the first months of the war I met one of them in

Zurich. He was a mere boy, perhaps 22 or 25 years old.

This Boy

had boasted of his being the secretary of a secret national comité",

which had formed itself in Berlin, with the purpose to harm England

during this war. I took this for what it was ridiculous and des

picable boasts of a boy. It was so ridiculous. Think, a world-

power like England to be attached by this sort of "revolutionists".

But than, after months, when I would have money for my own

puzpo jea I at some moment caught the idea to use this "comite",

to exploit it, when it could be exploited in a financial sense.

must make myself clear of that. I would know, whether theybad any

money and how much.

So, from Zurich I went to Barlin and was nearly shot in Lindau,

where the Germans took me for a Frenchman, put me in prison for 5

days and maltreated më. But I succeeded to prove my innocence,

The Germans left me free again and I proceeded to Berlin to meet TAJ 'secretary". It was easy to find out, what this "comité" was

doing. It was all far more ridiculous still, than I had thought.
